Orphanage Home Visit

Today (25-12-06), we have visited the orphanage house in Mahara junction (Nearly 5 miles from Colombo’s city limits). It was arranged by our HR team, headed by our beloved member Ms Thilanka.

It was really a nice experience to be there with the kids. I found that I can spend my whole life only by looking at those kids.

Morning at around 9 ‘O’ clock I went to a wrong place and called Thilanka she told me that she was unable to find me in the gate. Then only I realized that I was in wrong place I need to travel two more halts. Anyhow I managed to find that place.

When I was going inside I found that HR team has already started their actions. They were conducting a small contest. All the kiddies were very much interested and impressed towards the competition. Asanka was directing that program.

Just after this we had a small break and then we decided to play a cricket match (The game I hate most). I was placed in a team but truly I have done nothing to the team, even Thilanka scored a lovely four but what I did was only missing a catch… mm… hopeless ne!!

Then we stop the game for the lunch. While those boys were taking their lunch we went outside to find a shop where we can have our lunch. After the long hunt we found a place to have the lunch. I’d like to thank Rakita, cos he bought us yoghurt!!! Thanks ya! You proved that you are really a good friend of us!! 

After the lunch we came back to the orphanage house. During this time one of the unforgettable events happened in my life. Some kiddies came to me and they were asking for my autograph. I felt so uncomfortable cos I have done nothing and I’m not big shot to give autograph. I managed to tell them that my auto graph is not necessary. Anyhow they got my signature and contact details. I have no words at that time. For the first time in my life people asking for my autograph from me, Oh thanks a lot AIESEC.

Again we had a nice time. Thilanka, Janani were there outside with small kids while inside the hall Buddhi aiye, Kanishka, Asanka, Shanika were doing sort of quiz competition among the secondary level students.

Just after this we moved to the final stage cos we were running out of time, we planed to finish the program by 4. Then kids were getting prices from our AIESEC people. They were overjoyed by this episode. Each and every kid was getting prices and once again we had some fun time with us.

When we came outside they were keep on saying that they wanna see us there again. That moment was really touching and I felt that we have done something good we must continue to do this.

Thanks to each and every one those who bring this program into a great experience...

1. Thilanka: Heroin of the day
2. Shania: As usual she was doing her best on that day
3. Pamothi: She came late but she was the one who left first ;) (I’m just kidding buddy)
4. Asanka: He was doing well and he always directed the program.
5. Buddhi Aiye: We were glad to have such a senior member with us.
6. Kanishka: She proved that she is capable of being an ET.
7. Mayu: Whoa! Whoa! wat a great member he is.. He was really doing well and I have no words man!!! ;). Who is that sweet guy?

Thilanka's Birth day

Yesterday (22-12-06) our LC’s HR managers birth day was celebrated. We were very excited to hear that they are organizing a surprising birthday party for THILANKA!

@ around 4 I got a message from our OC member Waruni akki saying that party is about to begin in Career guidance unit. I rushed to there and I found that MCP Sujith aiye was there and he was guiding some XCON members. I just joined with them. Mean while I passed my greeting to my dearest friend Thilanka.

Then around 4:45 our AIESEC members were entering into the scene and singing the birthday song for Thilanka. She was lost cos she expected party but she didn’t expect that people will stick into the scene like this.

After that she cut the cake and gave it to us inorder to celebrate her birthday. Then we put her in the middle of us and asking many stupid questions from her. She was nearly embarrassed by these funny AIESECers, but she did enjoy it.

All and all it was a nice birth day party. Thanks to everyone who made this into a living event.

Again I had a nice experience with AIESEC.

The Perfect University

In our last LC meeting we had Rajith aiye from Colombo South LC. He was telling us about the OC’s and how to manage the OC.

We really learn a lot from him on that day. it was quite interesting. Thanks to Rajith aiye. Finally he was asking us to visit for the world café. The topic of world café is perfect University.

Very next day I had a fun fiesta in my department. Anyhow I manage to leave from there around 5 and came to AIESEC HQ around 6:30. I found that there were only few members and most of them were from CN LC (Hooray!!).

On that day we were talking about the attributes of a perfect university and we found that many Sri Lankan students those who got the admission in Sri Lankan university had left the country and now studying in foreign universities.

We found some reasons for this. I found 4 major issues in Sri Lankan universities which have to be corrected very soon.

1. Attitudes of undergraduates and lectures
2. Lack of self driven studies
3. We must go for a change in our education system
4. Universities and courses have to be turned to face the future needs with proper vision.

In this meeting I suggest that going for the private universities may help Sri Lanka to over come the current problem. While keeping the existing government universities we can give permission to private universities to operate.

It’s pointless to say that private university is a thread to state universities, cos we can see how amazingly the private universities have helped the education sector of India and Singapore.

Those who have money anyhow go abroad and study in foreign universities, if we can get a private university then many people will be getting chance to study in university, and we can save our foreign exchange.

Since there were only few members we all got the chance to speak there! from CS
Sudheera aiye and Rajith aiye was there other than that all the guys were from Colombo North LC….. See our passion towards AIESEC.

We found a mentor!

We have to find mentors for our learning network. Since our PBOX based on English education we decided to find a English lecturer as our mentor.

Just after the lunch I met Sameendra and Dinusha in Gym canteen. We all agreed to visit ELTU (English Language Teaching Unit) to talk with an English lecturer. Finally we went to the English department and Talked with Mr.Hasitha.

We gave him the project proposal. He roughly went through it and he agreed to be the mentor, so we found one mentor.

I’d like to thank Mr.Hasitha for accepting our invitation on behalf of our OC.

According to our project plan we suppose to find 2 more mentors inorder to form a Board of Advisors.

Budget Planning!

Wednesday (13-12-06) we planed our budget. Though our OCVP finance got sick and absent, we didn’t give up. We just wanna finish the budget and wanna submit it before the deadline. While we were doing the budget we found that there were several points where we wanted to insist more.

First one is the conference, when we are doing the conference we may have to bring all the school children to one place and we may have to take care of their refreshments and other stuffs as well. According to our calculation or estimation, it may go beyond one hundred thousand. In this point we thought of having a sponsor for only conference.

Other one is we were planning to have a media partner. If we have a media partner, then it’ll be bit easy task to convince the sponsors. Since they are getting exposure through media partners they’ll thing of supporting us.

Otherwise we finished our budget. All we need to do is, make it more professional, which can be done within two or three days.

Trivia: In my last post I mentioned that we wanna find another Tamil school. Now we have raised 6 Schools, including 2 Tamil schools, 2 Sinhalese schools, 2 Muslim schools…

So that means Colombo North Education PBOX ROCKS!!!

We met Mr Ryan

Day before yesterday evening we went to AIESEC head office which is located in Kirilopane. That was a special evening for us because we meet the Asia Pacific President Growth Network Director.

We went bit early, so we were talking with Manula. Recently he visited India so he was telling us his experience in India. He really liked India, specially the foods.

Little bit later we got the chance to talk with Mr. Ryan. He is really cool and he shared his experiences on AIESEC. There were lots of AIESEC members from University of Kelaniya, University of Moratuwa, and University of J’Pura. Each LC members had two PBOXes that is education and entrepreneurship. They asked lots of questions regarding PBOX.

On behalf of our PBOX, Sameendra gave the outline of our project. She did it well. Like wise others also did.

Finally MR. Ryan cleared our doubts with the help of his experience. He brought many examples from Malaysia, Colombia etc. That day was an unforgettable day in my life.

Hats off to Mr. Ryan and his rugby performance ;)

Raising Schools 4 our PBOX

Yesterday, that is Friday (8-12-2006). We were supposed to raise two Tamil schools. We planed to meet at morning 8 clock but we started the meeting bit late, even though waruni akki was there on time.

Since Friday is the last academic day of the schools we were rushing to meet the principals and get the permissions. Already our OC has raised two Sinhalese school and two Muslim Schools. Now Waruni Akki and my self were set out to find two underprivileged Tamil schools.

Around 9:30 we came out of the university in order to find Tamil schools. By 10 ‘O’ clock we came to a Tamil school in Colombo 13 (Kotahena). We were not sure about the principal and their staffs especially how they going to react to our project proposal. We talked to principal and she is very much interested in this project and she immediately prepared the confirmation letter. She told us that she also a product of Kelaniya University. We are happy to see a Kelaniya graduate as a successful principal.

We suppose to find another Tamil school as well; since it’s a vacation for schools we may be facing some difficulties in finding schools. Anyhow we’ll manage to do this…

Hey we nearly finished the planning of the PBOX !!

Battle Begins

Battle for the Middle earth came to an end but battle for a successful PBOX has just begun.

Last Monday (On a full moon Poya day!) we were planning for our PBOX. Our PBOX based on Education. We identified that the lack of practical English knowledge in Sri Lankan education is a big issue. So we were decided to focus on that.

Summary of PBOX follows.

Name: Wings to fly

Vision: Unity through English

Goals:
1. Improve communication skills
2. Cultivate Unity among different ethnic groups (i.e. Tamils, Sinhalese, and Muslims)
3. Develop interpersonal skills of the school children.

Through this project we are trying to develop a solid platform for children to face the dynamic future.

We were decided to bring down 6 interns to teach English in 6 schools (TNs). All members agreed to bring down DT inters because it’s cost effective and they are the most suitable people to do this kind of community development program.

Then we set the Job description for the SNs. We’d like to have a teacher who can teach English in more interactive and practical manner, because we wanna attract the children towards the English using practical sessions.

We found that TNs (Schools) will get advantage by taking part in this program. These are the benefits they can gain by taking part in our project which based on exchange.
1.Intellectual resource for the schools.
2.Can help the children to achieve their potential.
3.Global exposure to the school.
4.Selected 6 schools can maintain a good relationship among them, even in the future after this project.

To move our project forward we want a firm financial support, so we have to find sponsors for our project. We focused on some sponsors and soon we’ll contact them in order to get the financial support.

Sponsors also can gain some advantage by taking part in our project. Since we are bringing down foreign interns it’s giving them a global exposure. Like wise in our web site we’ll put their company as sponsors. So it’s a good opportunity to promote their brand and show their social responsibility.

Then we talked about the mentors, conferences like stuffs, which comes under the learning activity section. Finally we came up with the time line but still we have to plan more on time line. Hopefully by this week we’ll be finishing our initial planning section. Then we can go to raise TNs and sponsors.

Yeah! WE ARE DOING A GREAT JOB!!!!!
